The Earth is a living being that needs to be nurtured. Clay, an amazing gift, connects us to our home. I fell in love with its tactile nature in college studying abroad. I found my style in China, carving repetitive patterns. My first spark of creativity was a section of a ceramics history book on the Majiayao people. The simple forms and slip designs inspired me to draw repetitive linear designs on paper or carve repetitive marks onto porcelain. I add celadon glazes, glass, slips and washes. At my home studio I create cone 5 and 9 stoneware and porcelain pieces. I add copper, iron, and cobalt wash to cone 04 bisque and coat with celadon or cream glaze to fire in my electric kiln. I now create macrame plant hangers, adding texture and depth to my flower pots. I want people to connect to my work in a tactile way, as one would the bark of a tree or the softness of a sweater. A handmade object is comforting. My work gives me a sense of novelty, reminding me of times digging in the dirt as a young girl and how I still love to connect with the Earth.
Katie is a former art educator who now works from her home studio in Gastonia creating her unique ceramic and macrame pieces. She is participating in vendor markets in the surrounding areas and accepting small commissions by appointment only.
